Now here is my favorite among all of my favorite Iasos albums! Very tropical, very relaxing, very zoned-out atmosphere while this is actually a dance album. What Iasos had to say about this amazing gem:

Debut release for the mind-bending duo of Sam Meringue (aka Explorers, James Ferraro’s 90210 etc) and Jason Pearl (Living Tapes). Yoga play a form of hallucinatory 21st century DIY ritual that filters metal bombast and black psychedelic atmospherics through hyperreal hypnagogic territories and Skaters-style luminal dreamtones. Parts of this almost sound like Lamborghini Crystal soundtracking some 1980s apocalyptic city-under-siege VHS, but it’s the metal backbone that transports it fully into its own universe, with flashing keyboards and buzzing electro-melodies generating a murky swamp-storm while somewhere in the distance the silhouettes of dinosaurs make a thunderous passage through the skies. Some tracks seem to be made up of a handful of simple sounds, a phased guitar, a keyboard loop, but the degree of F/X and the precise placement of the tones makes the whole deal sound miles deep, like Goblin’s soundtrack to Dario Argento’s Suspiria heard through torrential rain or black 1980s keyboard zones broadcast through ancient tannoy systems somewhere in space. Massively psychedelic and another thrilling step sideways for Meringue and co. Highly recommended. Buy it.

Taj Mahal Travellers - July 15th, 1972

Legendary improvisational group from Tokyo who combined Eastern and Western instruments, electronics and vocal chants, and used heavy post-production processing to create unique long flowing jams, with deep organic droning and pulsing, similar to some of the cosmic electronic stuff out of Germany at the same time, though filtered through a Japanese sensibility. Their music is considered at the pinnacle of Asian psychedelic music of the late 1960s and early 1970s. At the same time they were far closer to avant-garde minimalism, with some of the group even disavowing the psychedelic connection. Their few recordings feature long untitled freeform tracks, often taking up an entire side of the record. But you already know!

Steven Stapleton made an incidental sounds that permeate B-movies and early electronic music that attempt to evoke the sounds of the cosmos. Beginning with what sounds like asteroids hammering off each other, it promises to be an exciting and violent piece but after these few minutes of activity, the calm of an infinite void sets in and Space Music proves to be a predominantly low key piece that lends itself beautifully to deep space listening.

Now then, most of my posts are psych-out gatherings but this one is slightly off the hook. Dara Puspita is the only Indonesian garage girl band from the sixites. The band was a popular attraction in Indonesia and also in the region, playing to enthusiastic crowds in neighbouring countries, such as Thailand and Malaysia. In 1968 they took the almost unprecedented move for an Indonesian band of trying their luck in Europe and spent the next few years touring in England, Holland, France, Belgium, Spain, Germany and Hungary. They even played in Turkey and Iran. While in England they recorded two singles for CBS and recorded another for Philips in Holland. In late 1971 the band returned to Indonesia and played a number of concerts, but enthusiasm was starting to wane and in April 1972 they played their last show. But their music never dies. Never!

They plays contemporary music, exploring conceptually or instrumentally the sounds of African, Middle Eastern, Indian, Sufi, Pakistani, Easter European and Southeast Asian traditions. Fajar di Atas Awan (Dawn over the Clouds) was originally recorded by Philip Yampolsky in 1997, towards the end of his work on Smithsonian Folkways’s Music of Indonesia series. And now, re-released by Drag City, the tag world music is now a free-folk. Highly recommended.

Nisennenmondai, a group that creates epic architectural masses of instrumental sound treading somewhere between Lightning Bolt’s noise and Neu!’s Krautrock. Koi Pond is a three piece from NYC made up of some generally awesome dudes. Erik Roper plays bass and is a legendary artist/illustrator who does work for numerous bands, labels and publications such as Arthur, Southern Lord etc. while also playing in other bands such as Under Satans Sun and Mattalama. Pete Vogal plays synth while also jamming in Bow Ribbons, and designs arwork for clothes, David Aron plays drums, is the perpetrator for Little Cakes Gallery, used to skateboard alot, makes rad visual artwork, and jams in USUN with Mark Borthwick and Hisham Bharoocha. Despite these dudes epic resumes, Koi Pond is epic all on its own. Volcano is all about cosmic grooves, deep often minimal, endless repetitions that slowly evolve into more psyched out blissed out trances. Roper and Arons tight rhythmic foundations create the perfect backdrop for Vogal's synth improvisations. This is a meditative listen that never gets old, it just keeps grooving on and on forever. Hailing from Leeds, UK, Lanterns are Rhid Williams, Luke Vollar and Andreas Jonsson. Sonic vibrations of meandering drones resonating in eerie Taj Mahal Travellers-like mushrooms stuffed with chimes, ebowed strings, subtle electronics and other shimmering nightly meditation tools. The track begins with a repetitive but uncompromising drum rythm which occupies pretty much the whole 20 minutes. It starts slow and meditative, but soon various layers of guitar, feedback and violin (burried there somewhere) start to build more and more tension. Torwards the end it turns into a powerful splutter of guitar noise, feedback and fierce drum pounding. Do not wear your life vest.

The album as a whole favors long, droning songs with a ritualistic bent, and though it's a unique listening experience, it's also a tough one to connect to without intense concentration and maybe a few intoxicants. Fire Escape, was released by Smalltown Supersound on October 2, 2007. Produced by Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), and led these days by John Moloney, Sunburned Hand of the Man is not a band in the traditional sense, Sunburned is a collection of like minded artists and musicians gathered together for the purposes of group exploration and an undying search for the 'ecstatic truth'.

Kieran Hebden's relationship with Sunburned Hand of the Man began after Hebden read an article in The Wire that touted Sunburned Hand Of The Man as leaders of the "New Weird America". The story sent Hebden on a search of Sunburned records and he's been a fan of them ever since. Sunburned supported Four Tet for a two-week tour in the spring of 2004. A couple of years later in March 2006, Hebden asked the band if they would like him to record them in a London studio (the Exchange) with the idea that he would take the recordings and construct his vision of a Sunburned record. Fire Escape is that vision.

Both Sunburned Hand of the Man and Smalltown Supersound are fans of Boredoms and they asked the band's leader, Yamatsuka Eye, to create the artwork for Fire Escape. The artwork Eye created perfectly captures the band, the album and the sound.

This is practically one of my favorite albums of the century!

Led by Japanese synth master Maso Yamazaki of Masonna, et al. and aided by Fusao Toda of Angel in Heavy Syrup, this album is a monster Acid Fueled lounge party. Heavy on the bop and fuzzed out beyond belief, then twisted through a giant phaser and shaded envelope filters. Maso's skewed version of the swinging 60's on Acid Eater is far beyond anything that could be called retro or even campy. This is a rift in time, Maso's gone back and showed the LSD set how to really blow speakers and minds. Once again the Japanese remain the reigning kings of the psychedelic set and this along with any other Maso Yamazaki release is full testament to that claim. Crank this one up, the fuzz needs room to breathe.

Terry Riley's place in the minimalism camp of modern classical music has been secured ever since his '60s debut. His career eventually found its zenith with such marvelous as 1964's In C and 1969's A Rainbow in Curved Air, Riley's use of cyclical and repetitive patterns brought comparisons to fellow minimalist Steve Reich during this time, too. Having since fallen deeply into Indian music by way of several years of study with the north Indian vocal master Pandit Pran Nath, Riley found a fine middle ground for his classical minimalist training and the music of India on this 1980 release. With a specialized Yamaha keyboard and a 16-track studio as his tools, Riley creates four instrumental longplayers here, all sporting a mix of Far-Eastern atmospherics and minimalist explorations. Meditative yet quite provocative, Shri Camel will definitely please your swollen eardrums. Have a nice trip.

White Rainbow's ZOME is the first major release by Adam Forkner since his great [[[[VVRSSNN]]]] album and the first major release under the White Rainbow name. The music is soft, growing, beautiful, patient, and breathing. It is 4 songs and 42 minutes that is such a peaceful and beautiful piece of music to listen to again and again.

Here is what Adam says about this album:

"ZOME was recorded in the fall of 2003 with members of Landing in their attic studio as an audio love letter to my (at that point very new) eternal love vibe-partner Honey Owens. It Is the last sort of "ambient rock" recordings I've made, with guitars, effects, keyboards, bass, vocals, drums, and drum machine. It was during my national tour in support of my very first solo record called [[[[VVRSSNN]]]]. At the time of this recording, all the VVRSSNN vibes were starting to dissapear and the idea of White Rainbow as a name and a vibe and a more infinite concept was born. So this is sort of a segue between what i was doing as VVRSSNN and the more abstract ambient music I have been developing for the two years since then. It is one of my favorite recordings I have ever made and I am so proud and happy that is it finally coming out. So please, give it a listen and let me know what you think!"

This group is spiritually aligned in the same smoke-filled room with other such contemporary purveyors of modern psych as The No Neck Blues Band, Six Organs of Admittance, The Major Stars, Charalambides, and very few others. Headdress opens tentatively enough with a repetitive spindle of staccato guitar and vocal yelp, pronouncements of the coming celebration. Then, this 11-piece ensemble begins to engage and take off, employing bass, djembe, shakers, horns, flutes, keys and congas to produce a hypnotic mix that burns with percussive clatter, incisive guitar, rhythmic drones and the respective, shared passions of friends.

With a transatlantic sound that brings together both UK and American folk influences, Currituck Co.'s Ghost Man On First CD is a unique blend of sonics that occasionally brings to mind an imaginary meeting of Bert Jansch and Robbie Basho, the mixture of covers and originals is a mesmerising stew. There's the traditional banjo/vocal two-step of "I Truly Understand", Jansch's "Silly Woman" and Nina Simone's "Black Is the Colour of My True Love's Hair" (reworked as the folk-raga piece "A Raga Called Nina") as well as Barker originals like "Requiem for John Fahey", the astounding "A Raga Called Pat Cohn", which blends acoustic guitar with tablas and Silvertone air organ to hallucinatory effect, and the fearsome "March of the People Who Do Not Know You", an electric guitar freakout bound (and likely aimed) to upset folk-purist dullards everywhere.

This is one of the best collaboration album ever. History:

"Kinski met Kawabata Makoto in 1999 when he was playing guitar in Mainliner. It was our first tour and, though the shows were small, we had a great time playing with them and quickly became friends.

Over the years we played with Kawabata's Acid Mothers Temple whenever they came through Seattle and toured the east coast with them in 2002.

In December of 2001, Kinski went to Japan to play six dates with Acid Mothers and one in Tokyo with High Rise. The shows were amazing. We also had several days off to wander around Japan and see the sights (and scour the record stores). We ate tons of seafood and drank a lot of shochu and beer. (Note: Cheap shochu leaves a truly stunning hangover.)

One night off in Nagoya we went to Hiroshi's flat (Acid Mothers' rhythm guitar and keyboardist) for nabe and drinks. We brought our guitars and pedals along and recorded before dinner. Kawabata, Hiroshi, Matthew and I played guitar, Lucy played bass and Dave played bongos. We jammed for an hour and then started cooking nabe, Yoko made tempura, and we all cracked open more beers.

It was a mindblowing 2 weeks.

Months and months later, I sat down with the tapes and began mixing what seemed to be the most interesting 10 minutes of the session, which became "It's Nice to Hear Your Voice." Kawabata wanted to overdub onto my mix (along with Tsuyama, Acid Mothers' bassist, who wasn't at the original sessions) and the result are "Planet Crazy Gold."

"Fell Asleep on Your Lawn" and "Virginal Plane 5:23" are new Kinski and Acid Mothers Temple tracks (respectively).

Six Organs of Admittance - Compathía

Compathía, the classic album from Six Organs of Admittance, is so surprising. Ben Chasny, whose largely meditative Dark Noontide proved a major launching pad for this New Weird sound, has toned down the drone and made what is essentially a pop record. It retains the Eastern tinge of past recordings, but Chasny’s voice, and furthermore his lyrics, separate this from anything he’s done before this.
