Okkervil River - The Stage Names

Album keempat dari band yang berasal dari Austin, TX ini brilliantly mendapatkan highly acclaimed critics dari berbagai situs musik terkemuka. Thanks to the fuzzy-folk-rock vibe, The Stage Names is a relatively straightforward roots-rock record, rounded out by clever, pop-culture-obsessed songs. Melangkah lebih maju dari album sebelumnya, The Black Sheep Boy,

beberapa angle kasar dan hook-hook emosional diramu menjadi satu rasa di dalam good-spirited rock n' roll yang sejuk. Track pembuka yang berjudul Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe cerdas mengawali album dengan power yang cukup garang ala Arcade Fire, disusul Unless it's Kicks yang masuk menghantam dengan drunken guitar intro ala Walkmen, lalu diikuti sejumlah Pavement-esque ballads dan breakdown rock yang depressing yet addictive.

A Girl in Port dengan gaungan manis lap slide guitarnya menjadi key track sekaligus anchor di album ini. Album ini ditutup track John Allyn Smith Sails yang berkisah tentang coming home, moaning "..and so i fly into the brightest winter sun, of this frozen town i'm stripped down to the vault. My friends i'm gone..", Just a brilliant ending. Sound Okkervil River mempunyai keserupaan dengan The Decemberists, Neutral Milk Hotel, bahkan young Mr. Oberst and yet they seem to take the best parts of those three groups and leave out their less attractive qualities. While their records seem to have themes and use grandiose arrangements, they're nowhere near as theatrical, comical, over-the-top or downright silly as hipster favourites The Decemberists. Likewise, Will Sheff's songwriting is certainly not short on the sad bastardness of Bright Eyes, but it manages to exist without the melodrama and with far more to offer the listener. Finally, Okkervil River are far more readily accessible and less cryptic than Neutral Milk Hotel, both lyrically and in the existence of a singer with a voice that's, you know, listenable. With all of these things in mind, it's confusing and mildly frustrating that Okkervil River haven't caught on at the same level as the rest of these bands, but with a bit of luck, The Stage Names will be the record that does it for them.

Have you ever felt embarrassed listening to one-hit wonders or pop gems of yesteryear? Fear not. Your favorite Indie superstars are giving the OK by joining in together for "Guilt By Association", a collection of songs by today's most exciting Indie talent re-interpreting their favorite guilty pleasure pop songs. Petra Haden delivers a soaring acapella version of Journey's anthem Don't Stop Believin'. Will Oldham/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy turns Mariah Carey's Can't Take That Away into a bittersweet synth ballad. Jim O'Rourke, who produced albums for Wilco, Beth Orton and Joanna Newsom transforms the Spice Girls' ballad Viva Forever into something that wouldn't have been out of place as a take out of a Beth Orton session.

Lets all wallow in our guilt and enjoy these remembered gems, indie-style. yeah.

Neo Folk/Naturalismo Movement

Pernah denger Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Iron & Wine atau Vashti Bunyan kan? they are some of the few (pioneers to be exact) pengusung musik minimalis bernuansa psychedelic a la Vietnam Era. Well, karena emang musik 60's yang mereka hidupkan lagi. Kita tahu era 60's di barat adalah era dimana lahirnya suatu gerakan revolusi manusia yang rebelious, gondrong, grow santa claus beards, telanjang, mencorat coret badan serta mobilnya dengan gambar bunga bunga, giting di taman, dan berdansa di bawah bibir Mick Jagger yang melepaskan ratusan kupu-kupu ke langit. That's right, the Hippies. But what are they actually?

Originally para Hippies ini berawal dari sekumpulan orang-orang yang tergabung dalam suatu subkultur di Amerika Serikat pada awal 1960-an, dan berkembang menjadi sebuah komunitas sosial tahun 1965 dan menyebar ke negara-negara lain (eropa) sebelum mencapai kemundurannya pada pertengahan 70's. Awalnya mereka adalah bagian dari suatu gerakan pemuda yang terdiri dari beberapa pemuda kulit putih, between the ages of 15 - 25 tahun, yang mewarisi tradisi Bohemian dan Beatniks. Mereka menolak institusi pemerintahan yang sah, mendukung nilai-nilai para kaum menengah, menolak Nuclear Weapons & Vietnam War, menyanjung aspek-aspek agama di timur, menegakkan kebebasan sexual, were often Vegetarian dan Eco-Friendly, mempromosikan penggunaan Psychedelic Drugs untuk memperkaya jiwanya, dan membentuk komunitas yang intense. Mereka menggunakan Alternative Arts, Teater Jalanan, Folk Music dan Psychedelic Rock sebagai bagian dari lifestyle-nya, dan sebagai cara untuk mengkspresikan perasaan, protes, dan pandangan mereka akan Peace, Love, and Personal Freedom. Mungkin sangat jelas digambarkan oleh Beatles lewat "All You Need is Love".

Okay so terus what's this Neo Folk/Naturalismo movement? Ini adalah term yang lazim digunakan untuk gerakan folk music tahun 2000-an yang akhir-akhir ini muncul ke permukaan. Dimotori oleh Devendra Banhart, yang secara spektakuler memunculkan kembali atmosfir 60an dengan musiknya pada awal 2002 lewat album "The Charles C. Leary". Musik Devendra sangat terinspirasi oleh Vashti Bunyan, a long lost british female folk artist yang diorbitkan oleh manager the Stones tahun 1965 namun hilang karyanya karena tidak begitu mencapai kesuksesan di akhir 70's. But then ternyata karirnya tidak tamat sampai situ. Devendra re-discovered her dan akhirnya dunia menemukan kembali her lost jewel, "Just Another Diamond Day" yang dirilis kembali (which consisted of songs written while traveling in a horse drawn gypsy cart!). Beberapa kolaborasi pun terjadi, assuring her influence over a new generation of folk artists. Diantaranya Devendra Banhart, Animal Collective, Adem, dan menemani Vetiver tour keliling Amerika. Devendra sendiri sampai saat ini sudah menelurkan 7 album dan 1 album kolaborasi bersama Jana Hunter serta sempat dipercaya menjadi kurator untuk majalah Arthur dan menerbitkan album kompilasi atas namanya bertajuk "The Golden Apples of the Sun" berisi belasan New Folk tracks. Album terbarunya akan lahir September mendatang.

Beberapa artis lain pengusung musik ini melahirkan kembali sound-sound pendahulu mereka di tahun 60-an. Gitar akustik, woodwinds, percussion, sitar, bahkan harpa menjadi senjata utama dalam genre ini. Elemen-elemen dasar American Roots seperti country, folk, bluegrass pun sering terdengar. Lirik dan temanya nggak jauh dari alam, perasaan dan interaksi manusia, binatang, pengalaman spiritual, dan sejumlah freak things lainnya. Oh yeah, bahkan banyak yang menyebut genre ini sebagai Freak Folk atau New Weird America karena memang kebanyakan bentuk musiknya lebih ke arah "Aneh" dan sulit dicerna untuk telinga awam. Animal Collective, band asal Baltimore yang kental unsur noise dan experimentalnya bahkan memiliki lagu-lagu yang hanya berisi teriakan-teriakan, haunting chants, dan gulungan perkusi. For me honestly, gue suka banget sama musik ini karena menurut gue mereka bisa menciptakan suatu musik yang tidak hanya didasarkan oleh kreatifitas yang way beyond imagination, namun juga estetika dari keunikan musiknya masing-masing, menemukan identitas diri yang membawa mereka ke suatu ruangan yang bertuliskan "Freaks". No, lebih tepatnya "Genius". Hahah ngomong apaan sih gue, coba dengerin aja sendiri and start becoming another Freaks! (in a good psychedelic way). PEACE.

Ah okay here's for starter, gimana kalo kita nonton Feist live performance di talk show Late Show with David Letterman? gue tau lo semua udah denger latest albumnya, "The Reminder" and you must love it to your backbones. but prepared to this; her backing choirs included list of Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene), A.C. Newman (The New Pornographers), Aaron Dessner, Bryan Devendorf, and Scott Devendorf (The National), Nicole Atkins, everybody in Grizzly Bear, and the suami isteri rockers, Mates of State.

It's like "We Are the World" of Indie Rock.
